Jennifer Piel, MD, JD is a clinical and forensic psychiatrist. She currently works as a Staff Psychiatrist and Director of the Disruptive Behavior Evaluation Clinic at the VA Puget Sound, Seattle Division. Dr. Piel is also an Assistant Professor and Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency Training Program at the University of Washington.
Dr. Piel completed her medical training at the University of Southern California and her residency training in psychiatry at the University of Washington. She then completed fellowship training in forensic psychiatry at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to her medical training, Dr. Piel earned her law degree from the University of Washington.
Dr. Piel is Board Certified in both general psychiatry as well as forensic psychiatry. She is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the Ethics and Research Committees of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL). Dr. Piel twice earned the prestigious Young Investigator Award from AAPL. She is the Legal Digest Editor for the Journal of the Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.
Dr. Piel has served as an expert witness or consultant in legal cases involving criminal and civil competencies; criminal responsibility; malpractice; violence risk assessment; sexual and gender harassment; and fitness for duty, among others. Dr. Piel teaches courses in forensic mental health at the University of Washington. She speaks locally and nationally on topics related to psychiatry and the law.
